Project Overview:
City Gallery’s exhibition of three contemporary New Zealand photographers was to be documented in a catalogue by Wellington art publishers, Bad News Books. Working with publisher and artist Harry Culy (whose work was featured in the exhibition) and exhibition curator Aaron Lister, we devised a trio of books, housed within a slipcase, that could each stand on their own while being part of a whole.

Kaupapa:
The values of both City Gallery and Bad News Books were taken into consideration while collaborating with the three photographers to document both their individual bodies of work and the exhibition as a whole.

The design was led by the desire to treat the three photographers equally, without the order of precedence that a single book’s linear presentation necessarily involves.

Response:
The end result was three small books, each with a different paper stock that was chosen to complement the inherent qualities of each artist’s work. The books were housed in a slipcase and had covers in black and three shades of grey to unify the components. The shades of black and grey also articulate photography at its core: original greyscale.

The quiet understated design lets the work speak for itself, both individually and as a whole, and the voice of the artists predominate over the design, creating a hierarchy that places the artist first.
